Spartans claim point in home duel with Baltimore
The Spartans ended a run of 2 defeats when they fought back to claim a point in a tight home game with the Baltimore Bohemians at Rider University on Wednesday evening.
The game was very tight in the first 45 minutes with the visiting Bohemians having the best chances of the game. The best of these came when the Baltimore forward was played through and forced Spartans keeper Louisignau into an excellent stop as he stayed big to the last second. Other than this opportunity it was a midfield battle with both sides realising the importance of claiming a positive result.
The second half saw the Spartans increase the pressure on the Baltimore goal and force the Bohemians goalkeeper Saunders into a number of smart saves. Forward Claude Tahi created two of the best opportunities for himself when he cut in from the left hand side and curled a shot towards the top corner of the goal. Despite looking like it was going in the strike glanced the post. His second effort was from the opposite side as he cut in from the right and struck a firm shot with his left foot. Again the shot looked destined for the top corner but just missed.
With the home side looking like they were going to open the scoring it was the visitors who struck first. The Bohemians took advantage of the unorganized Spartans at a free kick as they took it quickly and slipped a through ball down to Fernandez and he finished calmly to give Baltimore the 1-0 lead. The home side were not happy that the goal was allowed to stand but the referee waved away their protests.
With time ticking away it was looking like another frustrating evening for the inexperienced Spartans side but livewire striker Claude Tahi again popped up with a crucial goal. Central Jersey took a quick throw in from the right hand side which set Louisignau free. He reached the end line and cut a fine ball back and their was Tahi to firmly finish and rescue a point.
At full time there was a mixture of frustration and relief among the Spartans as Head Coach Newman said "we felt like it was a game we could get 3 points out of but Baltimore played well and kept it tight in the first half. I thought we were much better in the second half and Claude was very close with a couple of fantastic individual efforts. In the end we're happy to not lose but at the same time felt we have left a couple of points out there".
The Spartans are next in action as they take a flight to Bermuda to play the Hogges on Sunday afternoon with a 4 pm kick off.
